When I used to work for a large UK defence contractor, this is the sort of reply we would give users in circumstances like this:
"Dear Mr Goldman, we have examined your issue carefully and after a thorough forensic probe, have determined that your computer was affected by the recent cosmic shower. A single memory transistor cell was affected which changed state from 0 to 1, and as a result the second bit in the letter 'F' was set, transforming the contents of that memory location into an 'H'.
