From my 10.4 machine:

QMake version 2.01a
Using Qt version 4.6.2 in /usr/lib

Ubuntu 8:

QMake version 2.01a
Using Qt version 4.3.4 in /usr/lib

I saw the same crash, but haven't dug into it, I've got other issues with U10.
I seem to recall getting Ubuntu 8 stood up was a lot less bumpy in general,
although a simple U10 legacy laptop install was easy enough.

Let me know if it would be useful for me to provide access.
