I probably should clarify that I initially served in the military for four years and then during my brief respite (two years) I have the pleasure of being hired and being permitted to serve as a Florida State Trooper.  I reentered the service, primarily because my wife wanted to return to Germany, and remained in the Army until I was injured in 1995.

I can't/won't try to speak for Billy, but I know of several persons in law
enforcement who were injured with cervical injuries and returned to work as
advisors and instructors at the academy. There are also several persons within
the Federal Levels that are in electric chairs, who still use their brains
instead of their bodies.
They are to be admired for their personal efforts.
