           ~TRAILS OF LIVING~

MAKE YOUR LIFE AN EXPERIMENT
Do you experiment with new attitudes and new behaviors? Do you constantly try to improve your skills? Do you make your life an "active science"? It is not hard to see what can happen when we refuse to improve ourselves.
Do you know who set the standard for fine watch-making for most of the 20th Century? If you answered, "The Swiss," you are correct. Swiss wrist watches dominated world markets for at least 60 years and Swiss companies were committed to constant refinement of their craft.
It was the Swiss who came forward with the minute hand and the second hand. They led the world in discovering better ways to manufacture the gears, bearings, and mainsprings of watches. They even led the way in waterproofing techniques and self-winding models. By 1968, the Swiss made 65 percent of all watches sold in the world and laid claim to as much as 90 percent of the profits.
Now...which country sold the most wrist watches in the 1980s? The answer is
Japan
. By 1980, Swiss companies had laid off thousands of watch-makers and controlled less than 10 percent of the world market. Their profit domination dropped to less than 20 percent.
Between 1979 and 1981, eighty percent of Swiss watchmakers
lost their jobs.
Why? The Swiss had refused to change the way they traditionally  designed watches and utilize the less expensive and more accurate Quartz crystal. (Quartz movement, ironically, was invented by a Swiss.) They did not seriously experiment with a radical new way of designing timepieces.
Our lives are not so different. Without constant
experimentation -- daily growth and change to become the best we can be -- our old attitudes, behaviors and skills will no longer work for us. The old ways of thinking and doing will be about as relevant as a grandfather clock on a space shuttle. We need toexperiment and improve. We need to turn our lives into an active science. "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do," wrote Mark Twain. "So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Make your life an experiment...and something wonderful can happen!--  By Steve Goodier

             ~TRAILS of LIFE ~

Creation and Evolution .. Science is in the forefront today. To present any theory to the world which is not backed by scientific experimentation is the height of folly. In keeping with this high view of science, a recent edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica tells us that to be truly scientific, with every theory, we must hold out the possibility of it being proved false. Without this, a theory is really not scientific. But according to this definition, one of the most commonly accepted theories should be rejected as totally unscientific. It is the theory of evolution. Is it possible to run highly controlled scientific experiments to either prove or disprove how life evolved on this plant? No, we cannot recreate the supposed conditions on planet earth millions of years ago. Not only so, most people in the scientific community rule out the possibility that the theory of evolution might be false. So this theory, the theory of evolution, is not scientific! The theory of evolution is really a philosophy or a belief system. It is something in which many scientists and other people actually do believe. To believe in evolution does have advantages. If you believe in evolution, you do not have to believe in the God of the Bible. You do not have to believe in sin. You do not have to believe in Jesus Christ, the Savior from sin. But you pay a great price. You pay the price of being unscientific. More importantly, you pay the price of dying in your sins.   Contributed by Dr. Dennis J. Prutow

  ~TRAILS of SCRIPTURE~

"When he had received the drink, Jesus said, 'It is finished.' With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit."
-- John 19:30

"I am the victim of a terrible diving accident," I said in a flat tone to the lawyer."It has left me completely paralyzed from the shoulders down."My dad's lawyer jotted copious notes as I droned on. I didn't flinch at the idea of making Maryland Beach, Inc. pay.  I wanted everyone to pay, including my parents who had brought me into this world-it was really their fault. But after my first year in a wheelchair, I began to tire of the self-pity. I turned to the Bible, and my guides became the Holy Spirit and a Christian friend named Steve. I said to Steve,"I can't face a life of paralysis with a happy attitude. It's just too big   "He had a wise reply. "God doesn't ask that of you. He only asks you to take one day at a time.   This fundamental signpost from Scripture pointed to the path away from pain.  I began to "wheel" the path. What came of my blubbering to the lawyer?   We lost the case.   The truth was I had made a reckless dive. That truth set me free, along with other truths like leaning daily on God's grace and realizing God's children are never victims. Everything that touches their lives,  He permits. The irony is you can't imagine a more victimized person than Jesus. Yet when He died, He didn't say, "I am finished"  but "It is finished." He did not play the victim, and thus He emerged the victor.
Forget the self-pity. True, your supervisor may be trying to push you out of your job. Your marriage may be a fiery trial. You might be living below the poverty level. But victory is ours in Christ. His grace is sufficient. Know this truth, and it will set you free.   Joni Tada Eareckson

              ~TRAILS of PRAYER~

"Dear God, please help me to see in every
disappointment and setback what you are seeking to teach
me. Help me to learn that lesson so that I will be ready
and prepared for any new door or opportunity you may open
for me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer.
Gratefully, in Jesus' name. Amen."
