Considering it WAS Bush who kept after the UN to get involved in the
peace process to begin with, I'd say it was about time.
I wouldn't credit them with "salvaging" the transition, but they did
aid in it. I credit the Iraqis with the on going effort to salvage the
transition. The UN didn't really bring anything to the table other than
another outside voice. They didn't bring peace either.
Of course due to the wishes of the transitional gov to try to
peacefully resolve issues with radical fundamentalists, Sadir must
again be dealt with. I hope they learn that the fundamentalists can't
be reasoned with, they want to split the nation into pieces. Shite,
Suni, and Kurds all taking a third.
As long as Iran and other radicals keep fanning the flames and it looks
like they're sending in fighters and weapons in an effort to keep Iraq
from becoming a Democratic nation, we may be there for quite a while.
But if it succeeds, it may help bring some form of stability to the
middle east. Which would aid greatly in our war on terrorism, and help
to diffuse the hatred used by the radical fundamentalists.
