i had a similar problem with Alltel. i downloaded all my billing information and requested cancellation politely and got a 'fee' for terminating after they auto re-newed my contract for another year. i stopped paying them and when 3 months later after they kept billing me and i kept not paying, they threatened me with a bill collector. i answered "thank GOD you are finally turning this over to someone competent enough to understand such maters. your incometence is overwhelming" at which point they closed my account.
i now use a pay-as-you-go plan. expensive by-the-minute charges but well worth the trade. i pay only for what i use... .
