I was the middle child in my family but definitely the most independent I unfortunately quit school when I was 14 but went back and passed my GED a few years later to go into the service and took all their test and physicals and then they lost all my paperwork so I decided to go into the framing trade and at 24 I went out on my own and was self employed as a framing sub contractor for 10 years when I dove into sci.
Like you Stuntman some members of my family tried to make decisions for me the main one was my father god bless him he did everything he could to urge me to stay in that nursing home, he thought it wasn't possible to live on my own but he was just as uninformed as everyone else and I remember what I told him "Dad the worst thing that could happen to me is I end up back here" and I guess he saw the light.

Hi Bobbie,
I'm the oldest of 5, the big brother who was the family mechanic,
carpenter, roofer, electrician, etc.
I was the most independent, the free spirit, who moved around the
country doing my own thing. For ex I joined a traveling carnival 2
weeks after grad from high school and knew I would be going into the
service in the fall.
Since my accident, the control freak of the family (the sis 2 1/2 years
younger), often sneaks behind my back trying to make choices for me. I
have the middle sis alerting me when she tries doing this. It has lead
to heated arguenments where I've had to assert myself reminding
everyone that I'm still mentaly an adult and no-one has the right to
make any decisions concerning my life w/o consulting me FIRST. She
messed up certain things I won't get into, but it did ruin an option I
was keeping open for myself. The family has for the most part accepted
that I will never change being strong willed. I will do whatever it
takes to remain as independent as possible, even though I've had to
accept the fact that I'm no longer self sufficient.

It's not the fall that hurts.
