Alice,
I'm a C-5-6 incomplete quad. My main mattress is made out of foam and
on top of that I have an alternating air mattress. For the past 4.5 years
I have not once had an ulcer but I take that day by day. If you look into
alternating air mattresses, make sure you are looking at the ones that are
designed for his weight. The air mattress that was prescribed for me was
too light duty for my weight which, made them blow out. I finally received
the proper alternating air mattress last month and have been sleeping the best
ever since I've been out of the hospital.
I was catheterized every six hours also but I am fortunate to have some of
my bladder function returned to where I have a spontaneous bladder now so I can
wear condom catheters. I cannot use an indwelling catheter and I do not
need a suprapubic catheter so I will let others comment on the pros and cons of
them.
