I have been to ICU three times. The second time was to monitor me during bilateral pneumonia. The third time was last year following the bleeding incident from a botched colonoscopy. The first I will always remember, though. Although I did not become violent, I had fever induced delusional episodes. The delusions which I experienced lived with me for quite some time and it has been only over the last year that I have began to sleep without a television on. The bouts which I faced during my initial ICU visit are extraordinarily vivid and real to me. I wish you luck in trying to overcome any difficulties would you encountered in ICU.
I just realized I said three times, but the truth is it has been four times. The first time was when I was initially injured; the second time was during my rehabilitation. I was suffering from internal bleeding due to prolonged use of steroids to reduce the inflammation of my spinal cord. I did not get any psychological help in dealing with my anxieties, but if you have the opportunity I would suggest seeking some help if at all possible.
