More Good News: Both the House and Senate Introducing Pro-Stem Cell Bills!

A few weeks ago, we asked you to ask your member of Congress to sign on to the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. This Wednesday, both the Senate and the House of Representatives plan to introduce this bill to expand the current policy funding embryonic stem cell research. Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representatives Mike Castle (R-DE) and Diana DeGette (D-CO) will lead the charge. We are working to build up a head of steam for this legislation and they need your continued help to gain new co-sponsors.

You may recall that this legislation would allow federal funds to be used to conduct research on stem cells that meet the following criteria:

  • Embryos were originally created for fertility treatment purposes and are in excess of clinical need;
  • The individuals seeking fertility treatments for whom the embryos were created have determined that the embryos will not be implanted in a woman and will be discarded; and
  • The individuals for whom the embryos were created have provided written consent for embryo donation.

If you havent already, please take a minute to tell your Representative and Senators to sign on to this bill. Click here .

In short, this bill asks for embryos that would be discarded to be used instead for research with the potential to save lives! We think this bill represents a modest and ethical way to pursue the promise of this field of study.  In fact, this bill is about closing the gap between the number of stem cell lines made available by President Bush over three years ago, and the actual number of lines that have proven to be untainted and available for research.

Opponents of increased research are wasting no time in mobilizing. President Bush made a subtle but unmistakeable point in his State of the Union that he thinks the status quolimiting research and its possibilityis sufficient. We disagree.

There is no time to waste. Please join us in our Campaign to Defend Hope:

  1. Take action ;
  2. Spread the word ; and
  3. Help save and improve the lives of millionslets keep politics out of science!

Take action now . Write your Senators and Representative today and ask them to co-sponsor the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act that would give hope and support scientific research.

Christopher Reeve imagined living in a world where politics would never get in the way of hope!

He supported embryonic stem cell research and SCNT, not for his own benefit, but for the millions of Americans who could live better lives through the advancement of research.
