A product known as "Baby Monitors" work well when you live alone and might 
need
help.  Golly, a set might go for $20 bucks plus but I pick these up at yard 
sales and resale shops for a couple of bucks each.  They have long ranges and 
can be plugged 
in almost anywhere.  They also have remotes with long ranges.  This way you 
can be
connected to a neighbor or aid in the next room, next building or next high 
rise.
This way, you always have an ear that is listening at night in case of an 
emergency.
