Dana,   There are several types of switches. You can control just about any battery or plug in item with a switch. Switches come in all shapes and sizes. Switches to open and close doors, change channels, pop- pop corn, etc. All switches that don’t have a direct/latch/timer attached are direct. That means you need to keep your hand on the switch to keep the item going. You can buy additional items that allow you to determine if the touch to the switch will be latch. That means you touch it once and it turns on and you touch it again and it turns off. It’s impressive what you can do. You can get into environmental control units. Just do a search and you can find a lot.
