In '76 the medical rehab thinking was that if a person could push a chair it would help build their upper body strength.  I pushed myself until I had a disarticulation of my right leg in '89, and by then the medical thinking was that having a Quad push themselves was just wearing out their shoulders.  I went to a power chair in '89 but both my shoulders grind and ache from all the wear I put on them pushing myself in a manual chair.  I hope this helps.
