You have to have a headset or ear piece not plugged into power although I have a cigarette lighter on my chair that I plug it into but I checked by unplugging it.
It works either way but get one put on your chair anyways it's very handy.

I just talked with a guy at Kyocera and he said "Yes it is 100% hands free...If you have it plugged in.) I thought of having a cigarette lighter plug put on my chair just for something like that. He said most of the ones that have voice commands can do it hands free with power.
QuadPirate, does yours need to be plugged in ?
