Hi Again Jim,
After writing to you my last response, I had second thoughts.
I like to refer to Hitler every once in awhile for his thoughts on this
subject and he always tells me the same thing. "Why does this world really need
you?" "What makes you so unique, that the world can't survivie without
you?" LOL. Potential employers won't admit to it but they often use
the same critera when looking for new employees. "What can you do that
will not only make me money, but a profit?"
So I ask of you... what are you good at? Are you properly trained and
certified? Do you also have a Master's, PHD or Doctor's Degree? How much
am I going to spend to train you before you make alot of money for me? How
much is it going to cost me to keep you around and healthy, as an
employer.
Actually, these very same questions can apply to almost anyone who is
seeking gainful employment.
I'm good at what I do, but I've also learned from the best and that, my
friend, takes time.
Take for example, ED ROBERTS. Post-Polio and a desire to get
ahead. He lived in an iron lung back then. Flat on his back in an
iron chamber. He could have let Hitler take care of him or just collected
from society, but that wasn't ED. ED wanted more. After high school,
ED enrolled at UCLA and had to live in a hospital while he wasn't attending
college, because the dorms could not support someone using an iron lung that
looked like a mini submarine on wheels. ED, finished college and
graduated. He too went looking for gainful employment.
He was judged, by his Vocational Rehab Counselor to be unemployable.
ED ROBERTS, wasn't satisfied with that and went back to UCLA and earned (not
got) his Masters Degree.
In time, ED became the Commissioner of Human Services, for the State of
California. He actually became the boss of the person who judged him
"unemployable." After 5 years as Commissioner, ED left his post and
started the World Institute on Disabilities. Actually, it was the very
first Independent Living Center in the United States. There is much more of a
story, but you'll have to read it yourself. Did I mention Justin Dart,
Judith Human and there are several others who wanted to work, and make something
of themselves. And time goes on.....
Justin and ED have passed on. Judy was Secretary of Education-special
education for years, before she left and went into International Banking.
People like the above mentioned were the pioneers for those who followed in
their tracks.
They made it much easier for someone like you to gain employment.
Don't Let Them Down.
Best Wishes
