The good people of my county threw a 2 day fund raiser, they did about anything you can think of. It raised over 50, 000 dallars for me, I also bought a van a automatic door opener also a 4wheeler to get around the farm. Now its a anual event to raise money for the needy, I don't know what I would have done if not for such generous people!Silas----- Original Message -----From: Eric OlsonTo: Lori MichaelsonCc: QuadSent: Saturday, June 17, 2006 2:15 PMSubject: Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Quad Expenditures_ Paul_C5 DrivingMy first van was paid for with money raised at a fund raiser that some friends of my parents through for me while I was still in rehab. Nothing fancy. Just a $5 all the beer you can drink type thing.

Welcome to this list Paul! Yes, we could all write a book and more! But your post reminded me of something that I wanted to post here for a long time. Essentially, a great majority of quads are on public assistance of some sort. All of our situations differ greatly but I always wondered that for those who can only have so much money and so much assets [dictated by state or county or whatever] ... how can they possibly afford a van? Especially with the prices these days! And even if they already have a van ... what about all the maintenance, the insurance, and so many other factors? Not to mention if someone had to get a new van?The government has it set up whereby "the system" has many of us to be practically destitute but does not take into consideration things like vans, home modifications, miscellaneous medical expenditures that are not covered by Medicaid or Medi-Cal, etc., ...... just to scratch the surface! It seems that we all get by one way or another. But has anyone else ever thought of it that way?Lori-------Original Message-------Hi All,I am a C5/6 complete quad.Fifteen years ago today I broke my neck.I could write a book about my life as a quad,I'm sure many of you could write a book also.I just keep on rolling.Due to a lawsuit I received just enough money to buy a new mini-van with a ten inch drop floor and a sliding door with a ramp.Division of Vocational Rehab payed for the driving adaptions. The van gives me such a feeling of freedom. The van and all the adaptions cost $50,000.If not for the money from the lawsuit I would never be able to afford the van.I feel bad for the many that are not able to afford such a van.I was thinking that if I did not have that much money,I would try to buy a used van without all the adaptions and use some fold up ramps to enter and exit. Peace, Paul
