Hey all-

Something I have learned over the years, is; prevention is the absolute best
medicine. I never took the time to look at my skin- until, in 2001 I had a
pressure sore that became infected and turned into osteomyelitis (bone
infection).... it nearly killed me. From then on I have checked on my butt skin
about mid-day everyday for any changes or problems with the skin. We apply some
bag balm to the dry areas during my mid-day butt checks. Knock on wood- my skin
checks have prevented any problems since 2001.

OK- so you would think after almost 19 years as a quad I would have it all
down.... no not quite. Three weeks ago I had yet another lesson in the
prevention department; pad your feed while on the shower/commode chair. I did a
hell of number on my right foot- I had a spasm and the foot came up and then
down real hard. I broke the toe next to my big toe when my foot slammed onto
the foot rest, the bottom of my heel had a deep contusion and blood blister
from when my heel came down on the bolt that holds my front caster on. The
blood blister was about the size of a walnut and the actual hole/puncture wound
was about the size of a dime. I am happy to report after three weeks of
Bactroban and seven days of Levaquin(because it started to get infected at
about day nine) the blood blister has dried up and the puncture wound is closed.

So this old dog has learned yet another trick- "pad those feet"!
