I personally like Vicodin cause you can adjust the amount, but there is much stronger available. I'm sure any real Dr. would help you find the best medication for him. While it is illegal, marijuana is actually pretty effective on nerve pain for some people. There is no over the counter medicine that will help that I'm aware of.
