Learning to Walk...a Second Time
*****************************************************
"C'mon, Tim, c'mon! You can do it! You can do it, Tim."

He recalls he could practically hear his family and friends as they silently
urged him to take his very first steps...toward his birthday cake! But Tim was
not a toddler reaching a developmental milestone. It was an even more wondrous
event...

Tim had been paralyzed from the shoulders down in an automobile accident on
November 6, 2003. When doctors talked to him about his prognosis, his first
words were: "I'm gonna walk again. I'm gonna walk!"

Now, on his 20th birthday -- through determination and countless hours of hard
work -- he is taking his first steps again! Tim is one of the thousands of
heroes we are so proud to support at the Christopher and Dana Reeve
Foundation...read on to find out why:

Consortium Associate Chosen to Receive Grant
*****************************************************
Sharon Matheny, who is a postdoctoral fellow in Luis Parada's laboratory at UT
Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, was recently awarded one of the
Foundation's two-year individual research grants. Partial support for this
award was provided by a generous gift to CDRF from the Sam Schmidt Paralysis
Foundation. As a graduate student, Dr. Matheny, who is also a CDRF Consortium
Associate from the Parada laboratory, investigated molecular signaling in
cancer cells, which communicate differently than normal cells do. Her
participation in the Consortium led her to realize such studies in spinal cord
injury could be very helpful. The complexity of spinal cord injury means that
combination drugs that attack at multiple levels must be developed. Armed with
the appropriate molecular information, researchers will have the tools to
construct next-generation "smart" drugs that are individualized for type,
severity, and time of injury. And, since Dr. Matheny's project is focused on
revealing potential pharmacological targets, the information yielded will be
extremely valuable for concise, efficient experimentation in translational
animal models.

It is her hope that this work will contribute to the develoment of effective
treatments for spinal cord injury.
