Dear Dana.

America's seniors and taxpayers lost out today when a minority
of Senators used a procedural motion to block a bill to give
Medicare the power to negotiate with powerful drug companies and
get lower prices for seniors.

When the vote was completed, 55 Senators had voted to allow
Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices and 42 had voted to
preserve the considerable profits of drug companies rather than
relieve a burden from the shoulders of millions of older
Americans. Alas, 60 votes were needed to allow floor action.

The good news is that, thanks to the outpouring from millions of
Americans around the country, a MAJORITY of Senators now support
Medicare negotiation. THANK YOU for your phone calls to the
Senators! Unfortunately, on this day, the big drug companies'
lobbying prevailed.

Senator voted. (Please note that, after it was clear the measure
would fail, Majority Leader Harry Reid switched his vote to Nay
to preserve his option, under arcane Senate rules, to bring the
bill back to the Floor to reconsider at a later time.)

This issue is far from dead. Not by a long shot.

In order to arm yourself going forward, Families USA released
some new data today. Click here

WHAT YOU CAN DO: If either or both of your Senators voted Nay,
call their offices at 1-800-828-0498 to tell them how
disappointed you are.

Background

Currently, the government is prohibited from using the
bargaining power of 43 million Americans in Medicare to
negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed a bill to
give the government the option to do just that. This was the
Senate's turn to "just say no" to the drug companies but a
minority of Senators was able to block the bill.
