well the causes of a syrinx can be argued, but basically anyone with a spinal
cord injury has set the stage to potentially get one

most people with an injury develope a cyst at their injury site(harmless),
but in some cases these cyst fill up with spinal flyuid and en large to devlope
a syrinx

basically any movement, bending, twisting, lifting, screaming......can cause
the syrinx to enlarge even further.

now if the syrinx grows downward, not much trouble other than pain, if it
grows to the sides of the cord much pain can be felt......now if it grows
upwards your function can be taken away.

they usually wont operate unless significant loss of function has occurred,
depends on the neurosurgeon
