Hi Amy,
Diagnosis and Treatment
Doctors may suspect a syrinx in a young child or teenager on the basis of
symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a paramagnetic contrast agent,
such as gadolinium, can outline the syrinx (and a tumor if present).

What kind of test can they do to determine if you have a syrinx? My Boyfriend
has been having severe pain with no apparent cause. I am wondering if this may
be what is causing the problem. Pain is mostly in his legs but some in the
arms.

be argued, but basically anyone with a spinal cord injury has set the stage to
potentially get one
most people with an injury develope a cyst at their injury site(harmless),
but in some cases these cyst fill up with spinal flyuid and en large to devlope
a syrinx
basically any movement, bending, twisting, lifting, screaming......can cause
the syrinx to enlarge even further.
now if the syrinx grows downward, not much trouble other than pain, if it
grows to the sides of the cord much pain can be felt......now if it grows
upwards your function can be taken away.
they usually wont operate unless significant loss of function has occurred,
depends on the neurosurgeon
