I just had this talk with my doc.  Iron needs a very acidic stomach to be 
absorbed and even then, at best, from a 50mg tab you'll get 2-3mg!

If you take antacids, proton pump inhibiters, H2-blockers (like Prevacid, 
Prilosec, Zantac , etc.) you'll get almost nothing ... if at all.  Iron absorbs 
through the stomach but not in the intestines.

However, if yo take iron WITH a Vitamin C there's a chance of enough stomach 
acid long enough to absorb it.

The IVs are effective with or without stomach acid.  It's a half-hour or 1hr 
infusion that last up to 3 months.

That's the best I can tell ya.  Hope it helps.  The vitamin C + ion brought me 
up from "slightly anemic" to "normal."
