I prefer the term cynicism and a common quote way back in 1939 says :

I can't even believe what has transpired in our lives just this week!

It may take a short time for some folks or a long time for others to get
kicked in the head by others enough times to be able to see that the world
out there for centuries and centuries is a bad place. Well, it is people
that make it that way.

I think the big black actor in the movie *The Green Mile* sums it up quite
well toward the end of the movie when he would prefer death over life and *
why*.
