These are issues that I face also. In a pinch we are able to go without a hospital bed, but if you or caregiver is suffering from a back problem, then it's probably not beneficial.
I haven't traveled since 98 and the primary reason is because it is difficult to find reasonably priced rooms which also afford me the ability to transfer safely into a bed. There is also the issue of clearance space under the bed. I think my Hoyer needs about 3 inches of clearance. I have been told in the past that some people carry blocks to put under the beds.
