Thank you for your post, I currently have a Invacare Ranger X that is a piece
of crap! And they are trying to get me approved for the brand that you
mentioned and we are waiting to hear from the insurance company?? This next
chair will be my fourth since my accident and they have only last me just over
five years each time. The unreliability of the electronics and other mechanical
pieces of this chair is costing the insurance company thousands of dollars just
to keep me on the road! Just the other day I covered over 20 miles on the road
just traveling around, just knowing this chair it's on its last leg. I
sometimes get rear tires three times a year and batteries at least once a year.
This current chair was just over $20,000 and now they are saying that the new
one could cost up to 50,000 that's why were waiting for the insurance company
response. I am unable to drive  my own vehicle, so my chair is my vehicle to
get me where I need to go! Yes I use
public transportation depending on the weather conditions and the time frame
to get to my destination. I am a very active individual I volunteer at a local
elementary school five days a week, work at target on Saturdays and have church
responsibilities on Sundays. So I have individuals relying on me to be there
and can't understand when I call because I'm in bed due to the chair being in
the repair shop again. I only have Medicaid and Medicare insurance so if they
deny me I already have vocational rehabilitation Waiting to see if they could
pick up some of the tab along with the real services. Another idea of mine is
contacting some local companies to sponsor my new chair much like NASCAR and
will drive around with their logo indicating their sponsorship? I live in
Indiana so I will keep you guys posted on what their reaction will be and will
not ever have another Invacare product again! Take care and have a great day.

I wish it was that easy, and in the past it was. Now you can have all
the OTs, PTs and the best doctors in the world but if Medicare or
Medicaid or your private insurance says they will not pay for a
    stage 4
chair, you're not going to get one. How do they expect us to get out
    of
the house unless we have a good reliable chair? Especially those of
    us
who rely on Ventilators? My first chair was an Everest in Jennings.
    It
was a piece of crap. But extremely simple. You could get most of the
parts you needed to fix it from RadioShack. After dealing with the
constant repairs of that chair. I got a really good one called
    Century
21. I still use the same company today. Each chair last me at least
    12
years. I'm sure I could go longer, but the electronics eventually go
    out
of date. Unfortunately, the Century 21 is considered a high-end
    chair.
That is to say it's very expensive -- $22,000. But it's worth every
penny, because I know it won't break down, and it will last me more
    than
a decade. Would someone please give me an answer as to why insurance
companies will not pay for a good chair? Don't they realize that our
chair is our bodies? And how miserable we are when our chair is not
working? I see! They just don't give a damn.

[QUAD-L] Invacare Storm The human body was designed to last almost 100 years,
but not everyone is so lucky for that time. Government funded chairs are
designed for indoor use and light outdoor use. However, when the chairs are
used by Quads, they often get much heavier use. This is one reason why I
recommend using a Occupational Therapist with a Rehab Doctor to get a chair
that will last much longer......... Best Wishes In a message dated 6/4/2012
