There's a bunch of glands under your brain along with thyroid and adrenal glands that stop functioning as they should. Some are affected more than others. I've never heard a desent explanation for this. All quads are affected to differing degrees at different times. Pnumonia is an easy killer because most hhn's can't use a stethoscope. If you roll from side to side without sitting and coughing betweeen rolls you'll accumulate fluid in your lungs and in pops the hhn dragging germs like typhoid Mary. If your nice to kids some little snot factory may want to kiss you. I only had pnuemonia once. In 1995 my sister drug me to the doctor. I felt fine. The dr. put me in the hospital and by 8pm I was in critical care. I had to think about each breath. I recovered so I could tell you. Since Oct. I have COPD. We all know what we should do to avoid pneumonia. Obviously, many of us don't do it.

This particular topic is of personal interest and one that I felt I should share. I'm a C7 complete quad for 22 years. I cannot tolerate a temperature greater than 82° for much more than 20 min. or I overheat in a hurry. Quads are referred to as having poikilothermia. Meaning we have a tendency to adjust our temperature to that of the temperature around us. I would agree with the statements below regarding pneumonia and cause of death, but overheating can be a serious condition that is often not discussed during the rehabilitation process and learned the hard way sitting in in the sun the 1st summer after a spinal injury. Therefore, I'm including this link of an interview that describes why this happens. I hope this helps, stay cool and healthy. > > >http://www.healthradio.net/show/dr-house-beyond-disability/Health-Radio-Shows/Dr-2E-House-3A--Living-with-and-Beyond-Disability/Temperature-Regulation-after-Spinal-Cord-Injury-45014/details > > > >glen > >On Jun 20, 2012, at 3:14 PM, Danny Hearn wrote: > >yep-------pneumonia has been number 1 in quadriplegics.
