I believe its a nervous act of kindness, not to be judged, but rather
appreciated for what it was meant to be. Maybe the next person won't be that
kind or courteous. Remember the 1st time you opened a door for a woman and
she replied, " Oh, I can do that myself"

I forgive you (smiling)
Best Wishes

When I am food shopping I count the times people say "Sorry" as I navigate
among shopping carts at the supermarket. I answer "I forgive you." And
watch the reactions.

Why do people stand in the doorway when holding a door for me and my chair?
