There is a packet of paperwork you signed, or were suppose to sign upon
receiving your new chair.  One page in the booklet is "rent sheet or to own
paper" you would have to sign.  Apparently, from your story, it wasn't signed
and they didn't tell you.  Consider yourself most lucky and hopefully others
will learn from your experience.   Happy New Year.
Best Wishes

I had to get a new power wheelchair. My old one was so old, you could no longer
get parts. About 6 months after getting the new chair, I switched my health
insurance company. A month later the old insurance calls telling me they want
the custom fit, power chair, co-pay paid for, BACK. Without ever telling me
before, they now say it was a 2 year “rent to own”. That I need to get my new
insurance to buy me a new chair. Which means another 20% co-pay. I was not
happy. Lots of fighting over the phone, appeals, etc., things finely got worked
out and I get to keep the chair. Thats so unfair to even try that. The main
reason I won was because they never told me it was "Rent to own.” They were
supposed to tell me in writing beforehand
