The older macs are 10 mbps. These are definitely compatible with
EtherFast equipment.

If you're using multiple switches, routers and a broadband connection,
the first path, that from the 9600, say, to the switch will be at 10
mbps, whereas all subsequent paths will be at 100 mbps (and will be
full-duplex and non-blocking, too). The last path will be limited by that
device's capabilities (10 mbps for a broadand connection, perhaps 10/100
for a network printer, etcetera).

When intrermixing lots of older Macs and newer equipment, it is best to
get the older Mac to a 10/100 switch immediately, and to take advantage
of the "non-blocking", full-duplex architecture of the switch.

In this way, you can have a Mac taking to a printer, say, while another
Mac talks to a broadband connection, say, and each can do its business
without regard to the other.

There can be as many seemingly independent connections going as there are
pairs of devices present.

With an older interconnection technology, a hub, say, there can be only
one connection active at a time, as the technology is "blocking". It is
also half-duplex, so there can be only one direction (sending or
receiving) active at a time.

(To get 100 mbps out of an older Mac, you will need a PCI NIC).
