Might wanna ask the appropriate Power Mac list. It's a bit OT here...
That said, make sure there isn't a Comm Slot modem installed anywhere.
Also try booting with just the base Apple extensions.
If you can't fix the problem pretty fast, I'd just get a different Mac,
because those 62xx were known to have serious problems.
