Hrm...trying to think of what's worked for me in the past...the Palm
Desktop stuff has traditionally been very bad about this as well.

There's a program out there for reinitialising the ADB; I wonder if someone
has written the same for serial?  Might be worth a search at VersionTracker
and Info-Mac.
