I can't see what you are missing because I haven't used MacTCP since the 
last millennium. :)

You should use the Network Software Selector to switch to Open Transport 
networking. MacTCP is the old way of doing TCP/IP and much more 
difficult to set up. Once you switch over, you may want to update Open 
Transport to a newer version.
