>(I was hoping to avoid it.)

Open Transport is there in System 7.5.5, but it is hidden when you
are using MacTCP. Conversely, MacTCP is hidden when you use Open
Transport. You switch between them using the Network Software
Selector application (I think I have the name right). If Network
Software Selector has been deleted, I don't remember if there is
another way to switch. If you download the Open Transport installer,
I seem to recall that it won't install unless you already have Open
Transport activated, but it's worth a shot. As the pickle said, he
has download links in his FAQ. Or, go directly to
<ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Networking-Communications/Open_Transport>

and get 1.1.1 (the 1.1.2 readme recommends installing over 1.1.1).
