It sounds like something in your System got corrupted.
Have you tried starting up with no extensions? (Hold down shift
key during startup). If this works okay and the drive seems
to be okay, then it might be best to re-install the system
to correct the problem.
Also zap the PRam, rebuild the desktop. Then you should
be fine.
