I have a Q950 and looked at NetBSD and OpenBSD first (I run FreeBSD on my PC hardware). Unfortunately, both systems indicated that the Q950 was not 'fully' supported. So I looked at Linux. Debian has a 68K linux that supports the Q950 and most other 040 Macs. I ordered CD's from LinuxCentral. While I waited for these, I investigated A/UX, Apple's Unix for the 68K. I found the images for the install boot floppy, version 3.01 install CD and the 3.1 updated on the Archaic Apples website (cool site). I downloaded this stuff and installed it. I'm now running my Q950 with it. It does a good job of integrating the MacOS with Unix (not as good as OS X). For the Q650, there is an extra step in the install. You need a system enabler that get's copied to the install boot floppy, then onto the installed system.
You can find this info and other wonder facts in the A/UX faq. That can be found, along with lots of ports and patches at: ftp://ftp.mayn.de/pub/apple/apple_unix/ Cameron Kaiser had created some easy to follow installation instructions at: http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/os/aux/ The URL for the A/UX images on Archaic Apples is: http://archaic-apples.shauny.de/index.php The boot floppy image is a DiskCopy image. The 3.01 installer image and the 3.1 updater image are Toast images. I've read elsewhere in this comp.unix.aux newsgroup that these are compatible with other burner software that will burn raw images. Gamba keeps some good info and helpful downloads at: http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/ Finally, there is lots of good help on comp.unix.aux.
