hi,

first, say you want to go for linux. here i'm pretty familiar with how to set it up on
a m68k
mac, although not having done it to complete success, i can tell you that it can be a
fairly
complex (but quite gratifying) process. i'll try to be brief.

if you want to go the linux route, then get and install mklinux. it's quite old as a
linux
OS, but there aren't as many options with m68k as with ppc/pmac. but, since this is
just a step
to getting a working (and up-to-date) OS, this is ok.

then, once that's running, you can install an up-to date version and distribution
(debian - which
i'm running on a pmac 7500; mandrake; redhat [may be a little too commercial for some];
yellowdog; etc.)

the BSDs i have almost no info, but you can go see http://www.netbsd.org/ .

prior experience with any *nix suggested, but not required. someone used to an OS
that's
GUI-based may have problems at first, but once the major hurdles are crossed, it
becomes as easy
(or easier, imo) to handle a *nix box as it is to handle a mac OS box.

i don't have any more details than that, other than i tried once to install linux on a
68k, but
not having any documentation to refer to, it was rather painful. there is *plenty* of
info on
installing, running, and managing a *nix box.

here are some sites to get you going:

<http://www.linuxdoc.org/> (changed recently; it will redirect)
<http://www.debian.org/> (great support, the software is also well-supported and
documented)
<http://www.redhat.com/>
<http://www.mandrake.org/> (or .com/)
<http://www.netbsd.org/> (as mentioned above)
<http://www.freshmeat.net/> (software, etc.)
<http://www.sourceforge.net/>
<http://www.linuxm68k.org/> (not too sure of the exact domain name)

the one big advantage of the debian dist is that it strictly keeps to the GPL
<http://www.gnu.org/>

one more thing: i've been running linux on this old pmac 7500 (off-topic - sorry), and
i've never
seen it run so quickly - there's no CPU upgrade on it - i still have the original ppc
601 in it.
very stable OS, currently the computer has been up for a week, running an apache web
server, and
other things, with no slow-down. and, i completely wiped the mac os 9 partition i had
on it, and
installed debian on it. i may do the same to the quadra 800 too :).
