Dear Quadraphiles:

I am currently experimenting with a Newer Tech "Overdrive" 50 mHz CPU upgrade
for my Q 950. I am running OS 7.6.1, with 196 MB RAM. I got this gadget on
eBay, unfortunately the seller had no documentation for the gadget. The
Overdrive strongly resembles a Sonnet QuadDoubler: it has a 40mHz CPU on a
small circuit board that plugs into the CPU socket, replacing the stock CPU.
However, it is not the same design as the QuadDoubler, the Overdrive has
several chips not present on a QuadDoubler.

I reiterate the request I made a couple of weeks ago for any information
anyone might have on this thing... So far I've come up with bupkus.

Anyway, one thing I have determined with this thing is that none of my web
browsers seem to like it. Netscape Comm. 4.07 and Nav 4.08 are even buggier
and more crash prone than usual. IE 3.01 is also unstable at the 50 mHz
configuration. Even iCab, which is otherwise rock-stable (albeit slow) is
unstable, with inexplicable crashes, quits, and hangs.

I am wondering two things: Can anyone explain why the increased processor
speed would create instability?

Also, I would greatly appreciate it if anyone out there running an overclocked
Quadra, especially a 950, would report their experience with running browsers
at overclocked speeds.

Thanks,

Rob Johansen
