Lordy, lordy, lordy, The first reply nailed it! I went out, turned off virtual memory, rebooted and went from 143M in disk to 70M. It never occured to me. I'd just finished installing a 32M SIMM and figured, hey, with all that memory, why not use maximum? 'Course I had it backward, but sometimes I don't think too clear...
