I picked up a very cool looking Apple PowerCD, popped 8 fresh AA batteries in it and powered it up. It lights up very nicely, but doesn't read Audio CDs or CD ROMs. The CD just doesn't seem to spin. I can hear the lens wiggling around, but that's all it does.
The drive itself does show up on the SCSI bus, when I tried a SCSI drive mounting utility. I think it might have been stored in some extreme temperatures that hardened the lubrication on the part that spins the CD, as it feels very stiff when I try to spin it by hand, it does not rotate freely at all. The door of the drive, which I assume is supposed to "cushion eject" needs to be opened by hand after pushing the eject button, so I think that the goo that cushions the ejecting mechanism has hardened as well.
