In general, nearly everything 68k compatible will run fine on 7.1. I
have my main laptop, a Duo 280c, running (a majorly hacked up) System
7.1 and so far the only thing I have that doesn't run is the Apple
System Profiler from 8.1 (says it needs 7.5.2. We'll just see about
that...).

This includes Appleworks 5, Netscape 4.08, Word 6, various Extensions
and Control Panels to do various things, as well as nearly every addon
and extra you can stuff into 7.1 (Open Transport, Appearance ext from
8.1, Drag Manager, CFM 68k Enabler, Thread Manager...) and it still only
takes 3-3.5 megs of RAM to run.

Between the Appearance Extension and some custom hacks I've done, it
looks just like 8.1 more or less too. Best of both worlds :)

Subject: Query from new member about software compatibility

I'm a new member, and hope I don't get the protocol for this list all
wrong. If I do, my apologies. I have a question: I had 2 Quadra 650s,
my own and a hand-me-down. I gave away mine, and set the hand-me-down
to my son. It was loaded with software, but now, mysteriously, only OS
7.1 remains on the hard drive. I want to make it a useful machine for
school, but I no longer know what versions of basic software work on 7.1
(or, if need be, 7.5). Can anyone tell me what version of MS Word will
work? How about Norton Utilities? Does anyone know a website that
identifies compatibilities for an OS as old as this? My thanks.
