The static IP should work, that's how I have my Quadra 630 running 7.5.5
connected to the internet, through a D-Link router.  You'll need to fill in
a few things besides IP,  though I can't remember offhand what they were,
maybe router address and search domain or something...

I couldn't get DHCP to work under 8.1 on my 6400 either, so I upgraded to
9.1 and it worked great.  Obviously that's not an option on the Quads
though.
