The honest to god good reason being the only thing you can damage by wiring up a Cat5 ethernet cable wrong is to your self esteem when you realise you need to cut the end off and crimp on another connector. The voltages used are not great on ethernet, and it has fail-safes to stop bad wiring blowing it up anyway.
