Byron, I've had a similar problem on a different platform with a Sony CDU-76. I could only mount a CD after I had booted the system with the System CD. What fixed it for me was adding the Apple CD-ROM 5.4.3 (unsure of the version) extension ***in addition to*** the standard Apple CDROM/DVD extension.
