Justin,

Very litterally... put it in the freezer. I think the contraction caused by the cold can fix come issues of older drives, like maybe the read/write head has crashed onto the disk platter or something.

Hi, I know very little...

How would I go about "freezing it"?

Thank you very much for your input, and P.S. I do have
files in it that I absolutely need!

These old hard drives do go bad, often! If you have
nothing to special on
the hard drive, just replace it with a known good
similar drive. If you have
files you absolutely need, I understand you can
often revive a dead hard
drive for a small amount of time by freezing it. One
way or the other, you
need a different, known good hard drive. Good luck!

Hello, I have a Mac Centris 610, which has been
working perfectly until recently, and out of

nowhere.

It stopped booting up. What specifically happens

is,

during boot-up, all of a sudden the hard drive

stops,

as though shutting down, and the "mac face" in the
center of the screen turns into a flashing

questions

mark.

I have the 7 system disks, and when I put the 1st

one

in, it loads it, says "Welcome to Macintosh" and

then

"Welcome to System 7.5

Your Macintosh needs certain software to start up

in

System 7.5"

etc. moving right along, I click "continue", and
then...

"System 7.5 Installation

The Installer cannot update the selected disk

named

"Install Disk 1.

Please click Switch Disk to choose a different

disk."

And under "Destination Disk" it shows "Install

Disk 1"

and the "Switch Disk" option is faded, meaning I
cannot click it! So is the "Install" option.

I have concluded that the big problem here is that

The

Centris has failed to acknowledge the existence of

the

hard drive.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!

Justin
