My take is:
1261 provides a quick work-around for the assert crash.
Donald's fix in 1262/1264 is better, and good enough for current code.
1263 sketches a general robustness improvement, untested, over the
same issue.
Right now I would take 1264 in, as you have queued.

the problem.
