Don't duck! It's no fun if we all think and feel the same.

I go with the retro classic thing. Yes mrs Wastell said "shame it
looks like an escort". Same sentiment, wrong car! I worked around my
dash by putting in a red carpet (I always liked the 205gti red
carpet). Some recarro seats. Subtle door card and speaker
modification. Rs1800 centre console. And dropped the stereo to centre
console and put gauges where the stereo normally goes. The dash I
sprayed with black vinyl paint. I think it works nicely and brings a
bit of a fresh feel to it. Mrs Wastell says it looks much better now
(but prefers her modern golf!)

I'd guess that a good centre console will make the whole thing feel
more fitted than dash shelf feel. I think that feel is typical of
majority modern cars. The problem is finding a console that blends
in. The mk3 fiesta is close but not quite right.

I think a big problem with the age of the dash is the age rather than
which fashion period it was in when it was made. If there are ropey
edges or tired paint then it looks old and naff. We don't tend to
notice as for a lot of us the dash grew old with us, but just want a
change as it niggles in the backs of our minds.

I think Jim Hearnes 2+2 is a good example, the beige/cream dash
surround (to me) felt more dated than solid balck ones 5-10 years
ago. Now the latest cars use such colours, becuase Jims is in
basically as new condition it looks bang up to date in a retro cool way.

I can only hope my feelings towards avocado bathroom furniture change
in a similar way ;-)
