Not many of those kinds of vehicles out there owned by non 4x4 enthusiasts though now. Pretty much all the latest soft-roaders have various electronic controls governing permanent 4 wheel drive and don't have a centre locking diff either. With the perm 4x4 it's harder to break traction in the first place as less torque is going to each wheel. Land Rover stopped fitting the diff lock on the disco for a while as they thought the electronic control negated the need. They fitted it again later though ;-) Even so there is still a group of people driving big 4x4s that seem to think that if they can go, they can also stop.... A few of those off the sides of the A33 this time and couple of weeks ago! However, I drove from Birmingham to Basingstoke last night in record time, no problems, hardly any traffic at all.. Only slippy bit was A33, 30 mph on the straight bits and much slower for corners (probably 6 inches compacted to 1inch snow/ice). I've got engine retard traction control so I tested the theory that you can stick it in gear and floor the accelerator and let the engine management take care of it... It worked ;-) When I got into my own road I got stuck in the 6 inch deep snow (Seat Ibiza ground clearance is less!). I then used my manual traction control* (a 'secret' taught to me when I learnt to off-road) and I drove straight through it onto my neighbours drive. 2nd gear tickover, dabbing or lightly using the brakes 'locks the diff' to give 2 wheel drive rather than 1 wheel drive (4 wheel rather than 2 wheel drive in a 4x4 due to the diffs). Enjoy the snow Matthew
