I have to admit, we didn't make it back home the same way.
One hill defeated us, traction control doesn't help when all 4 wheels
are going round at same speed but the car isn't moving.
Just like ABS doesn't help when all 4 wheels are stationary but the car
is still sliding back down the hill on the ice.
The second attempt got us to about 20 ft from the top but we just
couldn't get up the last bit (even with the help of a spade) and once
you got that close to the top and stopped the car just started sliding
back down the hill.
It took so long to gingerly reverse all the way back down to have
another attempt i got bored after 2 goes.
Then found a stuck 2wd drive van blocking the way back so had to help
him out and following him for about a mile as he reversed back to the
main road !

Nothing 2wd would have got along this road, and several abandoned 2wd
cars obviously hadn't.

Fun is:
Driving a Mondeo 4x4 across country roads in deep snow and looking
at the faces on the real 4x4 drivers faces as they try to work out
why the heck i hadn't got stuck miles back.
Most people have no idea Ford did a 4WD Mondeo.
I was really impressed with it in the snow, plenty of grip, even if
it's
not lockable 4WD it has traction control which brakes any wheel that
tries to go fast than the others.

4x4 / 4WD is for pussies :)
