Sometimes the tracking can 'visually' look ok without using any equipment,
but be out of alignment. It could be worth checking it using a couple of
lengths of thin string. Just tape to the walls of the front tyres at the the
central height, tension to the rear tyres and see how well alligned it is,
and adjust as necessary. Make sure you allow for any difference between
front/rear track widths, and when adjusting aim to get an equal length of
thread for each track rod (ie adjustment done equal both sides) If that
makes sense.

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Re: bottom ball joint / wish bone
why is it that every time I do a job like this I have the feeling that
something isn't quite right, the car is up and running with no play at
the wheels or anywhere else on the steering, the tracking looks fine
with the wheels about parallel, but every bump, ridge or mark in the
road sets me thinking that I can feel play or that its not tracking
right, perhaps a trip to ATS or somewhere similar to have the tracking
checked/set and all the wheels balanced will be on for the weekend,
although with its more handsome brother (H4) being back on the road it
could be put off for a while.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, the difference between the "power
steering" and "XR2i and RS Turbo" lower joints is likely to be the mk3
vs mk3.5 difference that's the bane of many an H4 owner's life! The
mk3.5s (introduced in 1994) were the first Fiestas to have power
steering as an option and have different suspension to the earlier
cars - the diameter of the shock absorbers increased from 44mm to
45.5mm (I think), along with different hub carriers and lower arms.
The later cars, especially those with power steering, seem much more
susceptible to problems with the wrong lower arms giving rise to
binding driveshafts too.
